CYCLOPS, A ROCK OPERA
Psittacus Productions, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit theater and multimedia company, is proud to announce that the critically acclaimed “CYCLOPS: A ROCK OPERA,” will be presented at the New York Musical Theatre Festival this fall, starting September 29th at the 47th Street Theatre in midtown Manhattan. Featuring an original score of 24 genre-bending songs written by LA-based musicians Jayson Landon Marcus and Benjamin Sherman, “CYCLOPS” is a fast-paced, rock n’ roll musical re-imagining of the only surviving Greek Satyr Play, the story of Odysseus’ encounter with the monstrous Cyclops, and his adventures with the loud and crude rock band The Satyrs.
The show premiered in January at the Son of Semele Theater in Echo Park, before moving to the upstairs, experimental Carrie Hamilton Theatre at Pasadena Playhouse, where it received critical praise and consistently sold out houses.
“We’re excited to be presenting this musical on a new coast, at a new venue and to a new audience,” Executive Director Louis Butelli said. “People always seem to leave the show smiling and singing the songs, and some even make the humbling comparison to ‘Hedwig’ and ‘Rocky Horror.’”Comprised of Artistic Director Robert Richmond and Managing Director Chas LiBretto, along with Butelli, Psittacus Productions exists to create innovative theater art to share with its community, investigating the ways in which modern life and new media affect the act of storytelling.
